Pongal gets its name from the tamil word meaning "to boil". Marking the beginning of the sun's northward shift called uttarayan, it falls on January 14th this year. As the sun rises, the day is greeted with ringing bells, beats of drums and the echoing sounds of conch cells. Rice is boiled in new pots and is offered to the sun God.
